Imports of PPE from China to Russia in 2020 amounted to $ 2 billion

Imports of personal protective equipment (PPE) from China to Russia in 2020 in monetary terms amounted to $ 2.01 billion. According to the Federal Customs Service, last year China imported $ 691 million worth of medical clothing; masks, half masks and respirators – for $ 659 million; shoe covers, gloves and other protective equipment – by $ 437 million. For comparison: in 2019, the import figure was $ 0.57 billion. Since December 2020, government purchases of imported masks have been banned.
In the global market, China in 2020 was able to increase the export of masks and other protective equipment for the year by 300%. Analysts at the Peterson Institute for World Economy (PIIE) have calculated that in 2020, China exported medical masks and respirators for $ 53.8 billion ($ 48.8 more than in 2019), face shields – for $ 16.8 billion ($ 3. 5 billion in 2019), protective clothing – by $ 10.8 billion ($ 9.9 billion in 2019), gloves – by $ 3.9 billion ($ 2.9 billion in 2019).

In 2020, China supplied PPE to the European Union for $ 23.4 billion, in 2019 the figure was at the level of $ 3.9 billion. The export of Chinese protective equipment to the United States also showed rapid growth over the year. If in 2019 PPE was sold for $ 7.1 billion, then in 2020 supplies increased to $ 24.6 billion.

“The trade data show no indication that changes in quality control of goods from the PRC or tensions in China-US relations have affected Chinese exports of personal protective equipment,” PIIE said.

In December 2020, the Government of the Russian Federation decided to suspend the import of masks and other PPE manufactured outside the EAEU countries until the end of 2021 to support Russian manufacturers. As of November 2020, 141 million masks remained unsold in the companies’ warehouses. Also, a ban was introduced on the purchase of specialized medical products in joint competitions with other types of industrial goods. In addition, medical masks can no longer be the subject of one contract or one lot with other selected industrial products.
