September 17 – World Patient Safety Day
September 17, 2019 marks the first time World Patient Safety Day was established on May 25, 2019 at the World Health Assembly.
The goal of World Patient Safety Day is to increase global awareness of patient safety and promote overall solidarity between the professional community and the patients themselves, their relatives, and various patient organizations.
Currently, the definition of patient safety is primarily associated with the prevention of errors in the process of providing medical care and reducing the risk of adverse events related to the provision of medical care to an acceptable minimum. Such a minimum should be considered as a consensus of all interested parties, taking into account existing current knowledge, resources and the conditions in which medical care is provided.
According to the estimates of leading world experts, in different countries only with in-patient care, harm can be caused to at least every 10 patients. Harm can be caused as a result of a number of undesirable events, almost half of which can be successfully prevented. As a case in point, a 55% reduction in the prevalence of nosocomial infections is associated exclusively with the observance and implementation of hand hygiene rules.
The Federal Service for Surveillance in the Sphere of Health approved the Action Plan for the World Patient Safety Day in 2019. The key slogan of the current year in the Russian Federation is: “A safety culture is everyone’s responsibility.”
Within the framework of this Event, the following will be held throughout the country:
– Press conferences, briefings on the activities of the territorial bodies of Roszdravnadzor on the most important issues of ensuring patient safety and on ongoing additional activities.
– Together with the largest leading medical organizations of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, events will be organized dedicated to the World Patient Safety Day – Open days of medical organizations for adults and children in the Health Centers of medical organizations, lectures and thematic discussions with the population “Patient Safety”.
– Interactive workshops “Patient Safety Day” with the holding of full-time and / or absentee action: “Learn how to save a life.” Development of skills for conducting cardiopulmonary resuscitation on simulators.
It is important to note that it is planned to conduct open thematic consultations in medical universities and colleges in leading areas of scientific and educational activities such as: drug safety, the safety of using medical devices, and the safety of medical activities.
Both patients and medical workers, employees of medical organizations are invited to take an interactive vote on questionnaires on patient safety and medical personnel recommended by WHO.
We express confidence that the valuable practical experience accumulated during the first-ever “World Patient Safety Day” on September 17, 2019, as well as the feedback of patients and the professional community, will be used not only for subsequent annual events, but will also serve all interested parties to develop programs to improve the safety and quality of life and health of citizens in the Russian Federation in the near future.
We emphasize once again that each person, each team of professionals and each medical organization with their correct and informed actions can positively affect a good cause – ensuring and improving the safety of patients.
